Relaxed Marseille, France

Making our way to Barcelona, Sapin, we changed trains in Nice and spent a few nights in Marseille, the first city of France settled by the Greeks. It's on the French Riviera and had a relaxed vibe and rich history.

The train station and steps outside were our first exposure, and folks were lounging on the steps soaking in the warm sun. The monumental staircase at Marseille's Gare Saint-Charles, completed in 1927, features 104 steps and is decorated with statues inspired by Marseille's port and its connections to distant locations. On the stairs, Patchen saw someone with what looked like acacia flowers, and he commented on it. The woman heard him and gifted him her bouquet. At this point, we were loving Marseille.

Walking to our rental, the stairs and streets were embellished with murals and street art. We stayed at Le Soleil du Panier, which was centrally located and great for what we needed. While there we visited the Cosquer Cave, which is a replication of a prehistoric cave under the sea, and Mia and I loved it. Unfortunately, Patchen's claustrophobia make him retreat back to the surface. We also visited Notre-Dame de la Garde, known to the local citizens as la Bonne Mère, which is a Catholic basilica and the city's best-known symbol. On our way to the basilica, we passed a street performer that was funny, strong, and talented. We had a wonderful time visiting Marseille.
