Picturesque Amsterdam, Netherlands

Bikes, canals, and weed. No we didn't have any - we didn't ride bikes, we didn't boat the canals, and we didn't consume weed, but that is what dominated Amsterdam. Needless to say, it was a relaxed atmosphere which we enjoyed.

So what did we do? We went to the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, which has been open since 1838 and is the fifth oldest zoo still in operation. What astonished us was the closeness between some of the animals and patrons. There was a thin rope between us and the red ruffed lemurs, and they darted through us to get across the walkway. Another stunning exhibit was with burrowing owls, sloths, and pygmy monkeys, where I could have easily reach out and pet any of them. It brought an intimacy to the zoo that we've never experienced before and will never forget.

We also visited the Van Gogh Museum, and coming from the Louvre and Versaille the week before, it felt refreshingly small and intimate. We could focus on the paintings, and a deeper appreciation for his work was embedded in me.

Of course we had stroopwafels and fries, walked the neighborhoods, gawked at the city's sinking and leaning buildings, the scenery was postcard perfect.
