We’d hoped to get to the mountains, escape the heat, and visit the Fujimi Panorama Resort Mountain Bike Park in the Japanese alps, a few hours from Tokyo. We struggled to find a place to stay near the resort, so we booked a room at Comfort Inn in Lake Suwa. What we didn’t realize was that it’d take 2 hours by bus and train to get to the bike park and 2 hours to return to our hotel. We’d be traveling as long as we’d be biking for about $400 for rentals and lift tickets for the 3 of us, so we decided to see the sights of Lake Suwa instead.
We booked a swan pedal boat, and Patch & I pedaled while Mia steered. It was some of the toughest pedaling I’ve had to do -- and I raced road bikes. After 30 minutes of boat time, we rented typical Japanese "mamachari" (mommy's bike) 3-speed bikes and rode the 16km around the lake, stopping to visit a park, cool off in a small water park, and check out the dam and fish ladder. Then we hopped onto the local bus just as it started to downpour. Perfect timing.
