Oh Boy, Byron Bay, Australia

After Livvy dropped us off, poor Gaz got flu symptoms, and through lots of tears, we boarded Greyhound for a short hour ride to Byron Bay. We camped at Reflections Holiday Park, which is on the beach. We spent four nights there, which flew by, primarily because we spent one sleepless night in the hospital. Mia was having severe heartburn and stomach issues, which we attributed to her anti-seizure meds, so she skipped an evening and morning dose to see if her stomach would improve, but before she took her evening meds she had her first tonic-clonic seizure. Patchen and I have never been more frightened as parents. Because it was raining, we were hunkered in the kitchen area, so we called an Uber and went to the emergency room. The Byron Bay Hospital didn’t have a pediatric center, so we moved to another hospital about 30 min away. It was one of those moments we were ready to bail on the trip and fly home. Luckily, Mia received amazing care and she’s on new meds.

We thoroughly enjoyed Byron Bay, walking downtown, along the beach and boardwalks, to the lighthouse where we got a tour, seeing and HEARING whales, seeing dolphins mingling among the surfers and in pods farther out, and rock hopping along the ocean waterline back to our campsite.
